Genetic engineering can be used to attain durable resistance by introducing and stacking broad spectrum R genes into important susceptible cultivars. In our recent publication in Transgenic Research, we report the functional study of transformants harboring three broad spectrum cisgenes cloned from crossable resistant potato species. Our goal was to introduce the three R genes into a cultivar and assess their simultaneous functional expression. If there was no gene silencing, we should find a resistance spectrum in the triple R-gene plants caused by the sim-ultaneous expression of the three single R genes.
