Water challenge needs special solutions

The demand for water is surging. Only about 3% of the Earth’s water is fresh and only one third of that is accessible for human use.
Human water consumption has tripled over the past five decades, with agriculture now consuming nearly 70% of all fresh water. The use of water to support agriculture could grow around 11% globally, according to estimates.
Every year, some part of the world suffers from drought – in 2012, crop losses due to drought amounted to nearly US$ 40 billion. The problem is not confined to the arid regions of the world. Many water-rich nations have faced moderate to severe drought over the past 20 years, with often dire consequences for their agricultural productivity.
