PROCLAIM® OPTI is now registered for use in cucurbits including melons.
Users of the popular insecticide PROCLAIM® might have noticed the new ‘PROCLAIM OPTI’ packaging.
PROCLAIM OPTI contains the same active ingredient (emamectin), hence retains its Group 6 Insecticide status. However, users are now benefiting from the a new formulation and an expanded label that includes more crops and control of more lepidopteran (caterpillar) species.
PROCLAIM OPTI is a water-dispersible granule (WDG) formulated using the advanced Pepite technology process developed by Syngenta. This unique manufacturing method produces a product that dissolves immediately in water for greater convenience and efficiency.
As part of the PROCLAIM OPTI submission to the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA), Syngenta sought to expand the PROCLAIM label.
The original PROCLAIM label included use in brassica vegetables, grapes, capsicum, tomatoes, sweet corn and lettuce.
PROCLAIM OPTI is now registered for use in cucurbits (including cucumber, melons, pumpkins, squash, zucchini), legume vegetables (including beans, peas, sugar snap peas and snow peas), leafy vegetables and leafy brassicas (including spinach, silver beet, kale, endive, mustard, cress, chard, rocket, Asian leafy greens and Chinese cabbage (field grown only), and root and tuber vegetables (including beetroot, carrot, parsnip, radish, swede, turnip, sweet potato, but excluding potatoes) and strawberries. All field grown and protected cropping fruiting vegetables are now registered (including tomatoes, eggplants, capsicum and chilies),
There are now eight insect pests on the PROCLAIM OPTI label:
- Diamondback moth
- Cabbage white butterfly
- Cluster caterpillar
- Heliothis
- Loopers
- Cucumber moth
- Lightbrown apple moth
- Grapevine moth
As a Group 6 Insecticide, PROCLAIM OPTI is an ideal tool for resistance management. It should be used in rotation with other insecticide mode of action groups. PROCLAIM OPTI is an ideal choice following an application of DURIVO (Group 28 and Group 4A)
How PROCLAIM OPTI works
With expanded label recommendations, there may be new users of this product who need to be aware of how it works. Once applied, PROCLAIM OPTI shows excellent translaminar movement (which means it penetrates the leaf surface quickly and moves into the plant tissues) to form a reservoir within the treated leaves.
This reservoir provides residual activity against foliage feeding larvae. Ingestion is the main way that PROCLAIM OPTI controls lepidoptera species, although it does also show some limited contact activity.
Larvae die after consuming a lethal dose from chewing their way out of treated eggs, or, they die as soon as they begin to feed on treated plant material. Although feeding and damage stops immediately when larva become irreversibly paralysed, death may take up to four days.
The way PROCLAIM OPTI moves into and is locked-up within the leaf offers substantial advantages in terms of:
- providing relatively long residual control (up to 14 days)
- protecting the product from being washed-off the plant by rain or irrigation; and,
- keeping it away from the activities of beneficial species. PROCLAIM OPTI surface spray residues degrade within a few hours of application. Hence, beneficial species do not come into contact with the active ingredient once it is either absorbed into the leaf or broken down at the leaf surface.
This product has excellent crop safety and a relatively short withholding period, so can be used to reduce the risk of pest damage close to harvest
Syngenta recommends PROCLAIM OPTI be used according to CropLife strategies and current Insecticide Resistance Management Strategies (IRMS) in the grower’s region.
