Peter Groot Koerkamp, Professor of Agricultural and Bio resource Engineering at Wageningen University & Research (WUR), receives a Crossover grant of 7 million euros from the Dutch Research Council (NWO). The grant was awarded to the SYNERGIA programme, which carries out research into agricultural production systems. Groot Koerkamp is the coordinator of the programme.
In total, NWO is allocating over 39 million euros with the Crossover programme to five large, interdisciplinary research consortia. The Dutch funding institution wants to make progress on a number of major social and economic issues.
About SYNERGIA
Dutch agriculture faces major sustainability challenges, particularly in terms of environmental impact, suitable workforce, and social acceptance. Current production systems can only be improved to a limited extent.
The goal of the SYNERGIA research programme (SYNERGIA stands for “SYstem change for New Ecology-based and Resource efficient Growth with high tech In Agriculture”) is to develop and integrate fundamental knowledge from the biological, technical, and social sciences for the next generation of sustainable agricultural systems, based on the new concept of “technology-4-ecology-based farming” (T4E-farming).
Top researchers from five Dutch universities (in addition to WUR, these are: TU Eindhoven, TU Delft, University of Twente, and Radboud University Nijmegen) will do this using three examples that represent the diversity of Dutch agriculture and offer opportunities for synergy: greenhouse horticulture, dairy farming, and arable farming.

Important partners in the SYNERGIA programme are: technology and innovation centre OnePlanet, TiFN (top institute Food & Nutrition), and various parties from the business community.
With the approval of the NWO SYNERGIA programme, the AGROS project, financed by the top sectors Agri & Food and Horticulture and Propagation Materials, will also start. In the AGROS project, the fundamental knowledge and technology from the SYNERGIA project will be integrated and further developed for use in greenhouse horticulture, arable farming, and dairy farming.
Research into the lifestyle of elderly people also to receive funding
WUR is also involved in another Crossover programme: MOCIA (Maintaining Optimal Cognitive function In Ageing). Due to the ageing population, the number of elderly people with cognitive deterioration is increasing. The MOCIA programme focuses on being able to identify an increased risk of cognitive deterioration and improving prevention by developing a personalised lifestyle intervention.
The MOCIA programme is coordinated by the Radboud University, but various WUR research groups also contribute to it. This is especially the case for expertise in evaluating the impact of dietary and lifestyle changes on (cognitive) health.
The programme also looks at designing personalised e-health interventions to support a healthier lifestyle. The mechanisms responsible for the health effects caused by the intervention will also be investigated.

Miljoenensubsidie voor onderzoek naar duurzame landbouwproductie
Peter Groot Koerkamp, hoogleraar Agrotechnologie bij Wageningen University & Research (WUR), ontvangt van de Nederlandse Organisatie voor Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek (NWO) een Crossover-subsidie van 7 miljoen euro. De subsidie is toegekend aan het SYNERGIA-programma, waar onderzoek wordt gedaan naar productiesystemen voor de landbouw. Groot Koerkamp is coördinator van dat programma.
In totaal reikt NWO vanuit het Crossover-programma ruim 39 miljoen euro uit aan vijf grote, interdisciplinaire onderzoeksconsortia. De Nederlandse subsidieverstrekker wil daarmee vooruitgang boeken binnen een aantal grote maatschappelijke en economische vraagstukken.
Over SYNERGIA
De Nederlandse landbouw staat voor grote duurzaamheidsuitdagingen, met name op het vlak van milieubelasting, arbeidsbeschikbaarheid en sociaal-maatschappelijke acceptatie. De huidige productiesystemen kunnen maar beperkt verbeterd worden.
Het doel van het SYNERGIA-onderzoeksprogramma (SYNERGIA staat voor ‘SYstem change for New Ecology-based and Resource efficient Growth with high tech In Agriculture’) is om fundamentele kennis uit de biologische, technische en sociale wetenschappen te ontwikkelen voor en te integreren in de volgende generatie duurzame landbouwsystemen, die gebaseerd is op het nieuwe concept van ‘technology-4-ecology based farming’ (T4E-farming).
Toponderzoekers van vijf Nederlandse universiteiten (naast WUR zijn dit TU Eindhoven, TU Delft, Universiteit Twente en Radboud Universiteit Nijmegen) gaan dit doen aan de hand van drie voorbeelden die de verscheidenheid van de Nederlandse landbouw vertegenwoordigen en mogelijkheden bieden voor synergie: glastuinbouw, melkveehouderij en akkerbouw.

Belangrijke partners binnen het SYNERGIA-programma zijn technologie- en innovatiecentrum OnePlanet, TiFN (topinstituut Food & Nutrition) én verschillende partijen uit het bedrijfsleven.
Met de goedkeuring van het NWO SYNERGIA-programma zal ook het AGROS project starten dat gefinancierd wordt door de topsectoren Agri & Food en Tuinbouw & Uitgangsmaterialen. Binnen het AGROS project zal de fundamentele kennis en technologie uit het SYNERGIA-project worden geïntegreerd en verder ontwikkeld voor toepassing in de glastuinbouw, akkerbouw en melkveehouderij.
Ook geld voor onderzoek naar leefstijl van ouderen
WUR is ook betrokken bij een ander Crossover-programma: MOCIA (Maintaining Optimal Cognitive function In Ageing). Door de vergrijzing neemt het aantal ouderen met cognitieve achteruitgang toe. Het MOCIA-programma richt zich op het kunnen signaleren van een verhoogd risico op cognitieve achteruitgang en het verbeteren van preventie door het ontwikkelen van een gepersonaliseerde leefstijlinterventie.
Het MOCIA-programma wordt gecoördineerd door de Radboud Universiteit, maar ook diverse onderzoeksgroepen van WUR dragen bij aan dit programma. Het gaat dan met name om expertise op het gebied van evaluatie van de impact van dieet- en levensstijlveranderingen op (cognitieve) gezondheid.
Ook wordt gekeken naar het ontwerpen van gepersonaliseerde en-gezondheidsinterventies ter ondersteuning van een gezondere levensstijl. Daarnaast worden de mechanismen onderzocht die verantwoordelijk zijn voor de gezondheidseffecten die door de interventie worden veroorzaakt.
