DL Seeds announces the registration and release of two new forage field pea varieties, DL Delicious and DL Goldeye, for the Western Canadian market place

Morden, Manitoba, Canada
May 12, 2020

DL Seeds, based out of Morden, Manitoba is announcing the registration and release of two new forage field pea varieties, DL Delicious and DL Goldeye for Western Canadian market place.  DL Delicious with its exclusive seed distribution partner FP Genetics, out of Regina, Saskatchewan and DL Goldeye, with seed distribution partner Riddell Seed Co. out of Warren, Manitoba will be launched this growing season and be part of the Canadian Plant Technology Agency (CPTA) pilot Seed Variety Use Agreement (SVUA) project.

Lorne Hadley, CPTA, is pleased to see two more varieties be added to the SVUA pilot program to bring the total to 5 varieties. “It shows plant breeders see value in protecting Intellectual Property.”

“Both varieties bring unique characteristics to Western Canadian producers who are looking to replace their older forage pea varieties in either utilization as straight forage crop,  silage crops, or in a forage blend scenario” according to Derek Mohr, DL Seeds Pulse Business Manager.

Craig Riddell, owner operator of Riddell Seed Co indicated that DL Goldeye will be “available in very small commercial amounts this spring but looking to have seed production contracts and commercial seed available for planting in spring of 2021 under the SVUA pilot program. DL Goldeye is ideally suited for use in forage cereal blends with early developing pods and small seed size to facilitate blending.”

DL Delicious according to Chris Churko, Chief Executive Officer of FP Genetics “has the potential to be the next big forage field pea variety on the prairies and that FP Genetics supports the pilot SVUA project when commercial seed of DL Delicious becomes available in spring 2021.”

“There has been quite a bit of organization between the companies involved to launch and have these two new forage field pea varieties be part of the SVUA pilot project. The SVUA is very important tool that plant breeders can use to invest in more forage pea variety development.  DL Seeds is looking forward working with both FP Genetics and Riddell Seed Company to bring new forage field peas varieties to producers in Western Canada.” stated Kevin McCallum, DL Seeds General Manager.
