Millet is grown, since very long time ago, in cropping systems by small scale farmers in Iran, and is considered as a crop of high importance in emergency conditions. Considering the role of millet plant in fresh fodder production as well as rich millet germplasm available in Iran, Bastan foxtail millet cultivar was selected by individual plant selection in native millet populations.

Bastan foxtail millet cultivar has been selected and released for its high potential of fresh fodder production over short period (55 - 60 days). Average fresh fodder and grain yields of Bastan foxtail millet cultivar in experimental plots were 30000 Kg/ha and 2000 Kg/ha, respectively. However, in some growing seasons and under optimum growing conditions fresh fodder yield of 40000 Kg/ha and grain yield of 3500 Kg/ha were recorded.
