Globally, almost 2 billion people do not have access to safe, nutritious and sufficient food, and 690 million suffer from hunger. With 10 years to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, we need to fundamentally change the way food is produced and consumed.
Food Innovation Hubs are being established across the world to leverage technology and broader innovations to strengthen local innovation ecosystems for food systems transformation. Last November, the World Economic Forum announced the European Food Innovation Hub will be established in Wageningen.
Yesterday, Prime Minister Mark Rutte announced that the Netherlands will host the Global Coordinating Secretariat of the Food Innovation Hubs. This secretariat will also operate from Wageningen.
As one of the founding partners of FoodvalleyNL, WUR focusses on the mission To explore the potential of nature to improve the quality of life. WUR combines fundamental and applied knowledge in order to contribute to resolving important questions in the domain of healthy food and living environment. Over 6,500 employees (over 5,500 fte) and more than 12,000 students are inspired by nature, society, and technology and tackle the issues with an open and curious perspective. This inspiration has enabled WUR to be amazed, develop knowledge, and apply this knowledge internationally for over a century.
WUR seeks to find the answers to the global challenges in agrifood & ecology together; with other knowledge institutes, companies, NGOs and governments. Therefore, at Wageningen Campus, over 180 other organisations find their inspiration in science based solutions to these challenges. Let us bring these potential solutions into every day practice globally with WEF.
