LOS BAÑOS, Laguna - Dr. Torbert Rocheford, Professor and Patterson Endowed Chair in Translational Genomics for Crop Improvement in Purdue University, shared his expertise on “Biofortification Breeding for Higher ProVitamin A and Macular Carotenoids in Maize Globally for Improved Nutrition and Health’ on 6 July at the IRRI Headquarters, Philippines.

During the webinar, Dr. Rocheford gave IRRI scientists and research an extensive overview on the crucial role of biofortification breeding in maize to combat nutritional deficiencies. He also discussed the importance of high ProVitamin A carotenoids for addressing Vitamin A deficiency in Sub-Saharan Africa and the benefits of high macular carotenoids for ocular and brain health in the USA. Dr. Rocheford’s comments highlighted the prevalence of carotenoid deficiencies globally and the documented benefits of lutein and zeaxanthin on visual and brain health.

Through engagements with renowned scientists including Dr. Rocheford, IRRI continues to foster knowledge exchange and contribute to the organization's commitment to achieving food security and combating micronutrient deficiencies.
