Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) today invited submissions on a number of proposed changes to the Food Standards Code.
Applications currently being considered include two applications for approval to use food from genetically modified soy bean lines — one which is herbicide tolerant and the other with an improved fatty acid content.
Submissions are also invited on the second assessment report for an application to use Advantame as a high intensity sweetener in a range of beverages and as a table top sugar substitute.
Anyone can apply to amend the Food Standards Code. FSANZ assesses the safety of any new food, substance or food production technology and conducts a regulatory impact analysis to ensure that the change results in net benefits to the community.
Submissions on the soy bean applications should reach FSANZ by 28 March 2011 while the submission deadline for the Advantame application is 15 March 2011.
Application A1049 - Food derived from Herbicide-tolerant, High Oleic Acid Soybean Line MON87705. (Assessment report)
Monsanto Australia Limited is seeking permission for food derived from genetically modified soybean that has an improved fatty acid profile resulting in enhanced nutritional characteristics. The soybean has been developed to have an unsaturated fatty acid profile similar to olive oil and canola oil, while having less than half the levels of saturated fatty acids of commodity soybean oil. Submissions are invited on this report.
Application A1046 - Food derived from Herbicide-tolerant Soybean Line DAS-68416-4. (First assessment)
DowAgrow Sciences Australia Limited is seeking approval of a food genetically modified to be tolerant to herbicides 2,4-D and glufosinate ammonium. The purpose of the genetic modification is to provide corn growers with a broader weed management option. FSANZ has conducted a full scientific evaluation of food derived from this corn line to assess its safety for human consumption. Submissions are invited on this assessment.
