Seed selection is the first defense against seasonal challenges

USA
December 9, 2024

Seed selection remains one of the most critical decisions a grower can make. The right seed, on the right acre, at the right rate, planted at the right time sets the foundation for yield potential and defense against weeds, pests and diseases.

New Genetic Solutions For Battling Tar Spot

New Genetic Solutions for Battling Tar Spot

Kevin Fry, a Pioneer field agronomist in western Pennsylvania, emphasizes that genetics are the cornerstone of effective disease management.

“As we head into 2025, with commodity prices still under pressure, investing in crops can feel like a gamble. That’s why it’s important to have protection built into the seed,” Fry explained. “Genetics is the first line of defense against diseases like gray leaf spot, northern corn leaf blight and tar spot.”

Pioneer offers hybrids designed to help mitigate tar spot, potentially reducing the need for fungicide applications. Fry says Pioneer® brand P9950 or Pioneer® brand P0075 family of products are excellent options but recommends that farmers discuss hybrids specific to their area with their local sales rep.

“When we think about profitability and ROI, a strong genetic package can be the most effective tool in our toolbox,” Fry said.

New Pioneer Exclusive Z-Series Soybean 🌱 P28Z30E

Groundbreaking Pioneer® brand Z-Series Soybeans

Pioneer® brand Z-Series soybeans are a generational leap in soybean genetics for 2025, offering farmers a groundbreaking combination of industry-leading yield potential, enhanced disease resistance and superior agronomic performance.

“We had a challenging year, as we always do when growing soybeans. Despite that, we have some genetics that can handle stress very well,” said Pioneer field agronomist Matt Vandehaar.

A few standout varieties for 2025 include:

  • P21Z71E is an early group 2 leader with strong performance across yield environments. It has Peking SCN resistance with very good SDS tolerance. It also boasts good phytophthora tolerance.
  • P28Z30E is also a group 2 that offers exceptional yield potential along with tolerance to iron chlorosis, white mold resistance and offers outstanding harvest stability. The agronomic profile of this variety makes it a top choice for growers seeking reliability and performance.

“These Z-Series soybeans are designed to push boundaries,” Vandehaar said. “Growers can rely on them to deliver consistent results even in challenging conditions.”
