About CPVO
Since its founding in 1995, CPVO has been the cornerstone of the European Union plant variety protection system, enabling breeders to obtain Plant Breeders’ Rights (PBR) valid across the EU through a single application. Over the years, CPVO has received more than 80,000 applications and granted over 64,000 rights, reinforcing its role in fostering innovation and supporting the agricultural and horticultural sectors.

The Importance of Ornamental Plants
Ornamental species remain a critical focus of EU plant variety protection, accounting for 53% of all applications, followed by agricultural species (26%) and fruit/vegetable species (21%). The European Union remains one of the leading markets for floriculture, with CPVO playing a vital role in safeguarding breeders' innovations.

Economic and Environmental Contributions
A recent joint study by CPVO and the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) highlights that the EU’s plant variety rights system contributes €13 billion to the EU's GDP annually and supports 15% of ornamental plant production across the region.

Why IPM ESSEN Matters
IPM ESSEN 2025 is set to bring together over 1,300 exhibitors from 46 countries and approximately 40,000 visitors, providing an unmatched opportunity for CPVO and its partners to connect with stakeholders, breeders, and policymakers on a global stage.
