The Grains Australia Malting and Brewing Industry Barley Technical Committee (MBIBTC) convened recently to evaluate new entries and undertake ongoing assessments within the current Malting Barley Classification Program.

The following information provides an update on other varieties currently undergoing assessment within the program.

Summary of results:

Varieties undergoing Stage Two Evaluation

• Titan AX: Insufficient grain was available to complete full evaluation in 2024 and will continue Stage Two evaluation in 2025.
• AGTB0318: Insufficient grain was available to complete full evaluation in 2024 and will continue Stage Two evaluation in 2025.
• Laperouse: Sufficient grain was available; however, a Stage Two evaluation on the barley variety is still pending due to unavoidable delays. An update is expected to be provided to the industry in the coming months when further information is anticipated to be available.

Varieties undergoing Stage One Evaluation

• Spinnaker successfully completed Stage One evaluation in December 2024 and can now proceed into Stage Two commercial evaluation trials in 2025.

Varieties accepted into Classification Program

• RGT Atlantis: Submitted by RAGT, this waterlogging-tolerant RGT Planet-derived barley is suited to grow in regions of high rainfall and bred to withstand periods of waterlogging.
• AGTB0530: Submitted by Australian Grains Technologies (AGT), this is a herbicide tolerant variety, broadly adapted but best suited to regions of low to medium rainfall regions.
• IGB22023T: Submitted by InterGrain, this imidazolinone-tolerant barley is suited to grow in low rainfall regions.
• IGB22117T: Submitted by InterGrain, this imidazolinone-tolerant barley is suited to grow in higher rainfall environments.

Pending final quality checks, sufficient grain parcels are available for all varieties accepted into the accreditation program and will commence Stage One evaluation in 2025. Further details will be confirmed once the 2025 program is finalised.

Varieties withdrawn from the Classification Program

• AGT has withdrawn the barley varieties Yeti and Beast from the program.
