The Institute of Plant Breeding (IPB) will celebrate its 50th Founding Anniversary on June 5, 2025, with the theme, “IPB Golden Jubilee: Celebrating Milestones, Innovating Pathways in Plant Breeding.”
Scheduled are activities to celebrate IPB’s accomplishments as one of the research institutes of the College of Agriculture and Food Science (CAFS) of UPLB. The celebration will also pay tribute to the people behind these accomplishments.
The celebration will formally open with a program on June 5, 2025, at the E.B. Copeland Gymnasium to memorialize accomplishments and honor the institute’s outstanding employees and longtime collaborators.
The workforce will again gather at the same venue on June 6 for the “Fiestahan and Family Night.”
The program will feature cultural and live musical performances, and the staff will be dressed in 70s retro outfits.
To seek fresh perspectives in plant breeding and pave new pathways for the next 50 years, IPB and its co-organizers will hold the International Plant Breeding Conference on June 26 and 27 at The Manila Hotel.
The two-day scientific conference will convene distinguished speakers, experts, students, and partners to exchange knowledge and present research on recent breakthroughs in plant breeding.
The first day of the conference will be followed by the “KatHabi: Fashion Innovation Show,” which will feature prominent personalities, selected dignitaries, national scientists, UPLB officials, and representatives from national agencies, among others, in the most-awaited Gala Night.
Seventy different looks will be showcased featuring models dressed in apparel crafted from Philippine tropical fabrics using a blend of sustainable cotton, pineapple, and a special abaca hybrid developed by IPB in collaboration with the Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Textile Research Institute (DOST-PTRI)
Renowned Filipino fashion designers have created the designs to showcase the fusion of fashion and agricultural innovation and encourage stakeholders to support the development of indigenous fibers and local industries.
This will elevate fibers for use in commercial textile applications and on the global fashion stage. During the program, a new name for the IPB-developed abaca hybrid will also be launched.
The anniversary events are co-organized with the DOST-Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development, DOST-PTRI, National Academy of Science and Technology, UPLB, CAFS, Southeast Asian Regional Center for Graduate Study and Research in Agriculture, and Tan Yan Kee Foundation, Inc. IPB’s media partner for these events is The Manila Bulletin.
The IPB Junior Researchers Organization (JRO) 5th Scientific Conference held on March 13 and 14, IPB Farmers’ Field Day on May 20 to 23, and IPB Sportsfest (May 29 and 30) were also part of the anniversary celebration.
