Key grains research outcomes will be shared in New South Wales and southern Queensland towns over the next few months via Grains Research Updates tailored to local grower interests.
Registrations are open for the Grains Research and Development Corporation’s (GRDC) upcoming series of one-day events in Tottenham, Coonamble, Wellington, Dalby, Westmar, Moree and Spring Ridge in July and August.
GRDC Grower Relations Manager Sally Dickinson said the events bring together leading researchers, growers and advisers to discuss cutting-edge developments in grain production, farm profitability and sustainability.
“Each update is bespoke to its region, with topics selected by local growers and agronomists,” she said.
The GRDC Updates will feature sessions on farming systems profitability, soil health and amelioration, crop nutrition and nitrogen strategy, weed and disease management, emerging technologies in grain production, and more.
"They provide growers with access to the latest research findings and practical strategies to improve farm productivity and profitability. It’s a great opportunity to hear directly from experts and discuss how new innovations can be applied on-farm."
The events will be held at:
- 29 July 2025 – Tottenham, NSW – Tottenham Memorial Hall
- 30 July 2025 – Coonamble, NSW – Coonamble Bowling Club
- 31 July 2025 – Wellington, NSW – Wellington Civic Centre
- 5 August 2025 – Dalby, QLD – Dalby Events Centre
- 6 August 2025 – Westmar, QLD – Westmar Sports Club
- 7 August 2025 – Moree, NSW – Moree Services Club
- 8 August 2025 – Spring Ridge, NSW – Spring Ridge Country Club
At the Tottenham Update, a panel discussion will address changing farming systems with Joe Bowen (AGnVET Services) and grower David Greig, and CSIRO’s Lindsay Bell will present on key performance indicators and profitability of mixed farming systems versus continuous cropping.

In Coonamble, Steven Simpfendorfer’s (NSW Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD)) presentation, ‘Farming systems and crop sequence impacts on soil-borne diseases’, will be followed by a discussion with Maurie Street (Grain Orana Alliance) and Graeme Callaghan (Delta Agribusiness) on what it means for the local system.
Dual purpose crop systems will be the focus of a session in Wellington with Joe Mason (Spicers Run), Greg Miller (YellcoAg), Tim Wright (Central West LLS) and Matt McRae (AGnVET Services).
Above the border, the Dalby event will feature a fall armyworm update from Joe Eyre (The University Of Queensland) and Queensland Department of Primary Industries’ (QDPI) Merrill Ryan speaking on new mungbean varieties available in summer 2025/26.
In Westmar, Andrew Erbacher (QDPI) will report on risks and rewards of different N strategies following trials at Roma, Goondiwindi and St George. Ed Offner and Paul Gardoll (MCA Agronomy) will present on setting up summer fallows, exploring if growers can use pre-emergents and maintain rotational flexibility.
In Moree, presenters including Matt Gardner (AMPS Research), Andrew Erbacher and Delta Agribusiness’s Leigh Norton will take a look at the performance and experience of canola in North West NSW. The day will also feature three talks themed on-farm automation.
In Spring Ridge, Loretta Serafin (NSW DPIRD) will discuss row spacing to optimise yield and hyper yielding sorghum, while Richard Flavel (University of New England) will present on economics of soil amelioration at grower scale – long term outcomes from larger scale strip trials and small plot work.
