Leading Australian cereal breeding company InterGrain has released two new high yielding, main season wheats, Dale and Murray.
Dale, trialled as IGW6993, is a high yielding, adaptable main season Australian Hard wheat with excellent yield potential and stability across a range of environments in Western Australia and parts of South Australia.
Murray, trialled as IGW6895, is a high yielding APW suited to medium-high rainfall areas of Victoria and eastern South Australia, showing excellent yield potential in these environments.
Dale wheat – a high yielding tribute to a grains industry legend
Dale is a mid-maturing, highly adaptable wheat with high yield potential and suited to May sowings. It provides a significant yield advantage of seven per cent over Scepter (InterGrain 2019-2024 national long-term MET).
Senior Wheat Breeder Dr David Tabah proud to see new AH wheat Dale and APW Murray reach growers
InterGrain Senior Wheat Breeder Dr David Tabah said Dale consistently stood out in our breeding program, which allowed us to fast-track its development and get it out to growers and in paddocks as quickly as possible.
“We have a significant amount of Dale seed being grown across WA and SA this season and we’re excited to see how growers respond to its performance at harvest.
“In terms of disease package, it has a good profile, including good yellow spot (MRMSp), stem rust (MRMSp) and powdery mildew (MSp) resistance,” Dr Tabah said.
Dale also has good resistance to P. neglectus (MRMSp), which will be useful in environments where root lesion nematodes are present.
With strong physical grain characteristics, including good grain size and hectolitre weight, plus moderate plant height Dale is sure to be welcomed by growers.
Dale is named in honour of grain grower and industry champion Dale Baker who sadly passed away in 2019.
Inaugural InterGrain Chairman Dale Baker and CEO Tress Walmsley at the opening of the InterGrain head quarters in Perth, 2011.
InterGrain CEO, Tress Walmsley, said that among many grains industry leadership roles Dale took on with a farmer’s practicality, his own dash of intellectual rigour and a visionary’s viewpoint, he was the inaugural Chairman of InterGrain in 2007.
“We’ve long wanted to honour Dale with a namesake variety, and this one felt like the perfect tribute to his lasting impact on InterGrain and the grains industry,” said Tress.
An innovative and successful grain grower in the Hyden district in WA’s tough far eastern wheatbelt, Dale was a founding member of the Kondinin Group and an early member of the GRDC’s Western Regional Panel and its long-term chair from 1999 to 2007. Dale also chaired the Australian Centre for Plant Functional Genomics, Weeds CRC and Managing Climate Variability Program.
Murray wheat – steam ahead with yield potential across SA and Victoria
Murray is a mid-maturing wheat, suited to May sowing with its maturity sitting a few days slower than Scepter.
Murray is an APW wheat variety with excellent yield potential. It has consistently outperformed benchmarks in InterGrain’s breeding program, showing strong results in Victoria’s Wimmera and South Australia’s eastern regions including the Lower North and Mid North.
InterGrain Senior Wheat Breeder Dr David Tabah said Murray constantly looked good in trials for its yield stability and agronomic strength, prompting its release to growers.
“Murray has demonstrated exceptional performance across multiple seasons and environments,” Dr Tabah said.
“Like Dale, we have large amounts of Murray seed being grown across the Wimmera and eastern parts of SA and we are looking forward to see how well it performs in paddocks this season.”
In terms of disease resistance, Murray offers a solid package including stem rust (MRp) and CCN (MRMSp) resistance, making it a reliable option for growers in medium to high rainfall zones.
Murray has good grain quality, including strong test weight and good screenings in medium rainfall environments, plus moderate plant height and excellent lodging tolerance.
Murray is named after the iconic Murray River, reflecting its suitability for both South Australian and Victorian growing regions.
Murray and Dale seed will be available for planting in 2026 from local resellers and Seedclub Members or through farmer-to-farmer trade.
