Between May and July 2025, EWMM organized six field day activities across Myanmar’s Ayeyarwaddy, Bago, and Kayin regions, engaging approximately 200 farmers in the country’s main sweet corn production zones. The events introduced “Sugar King Improved,” a new hybrid sweet corn variety designed to meet both farmer expectations and market requirements.

Myanmar’s Vegetable Farming Context
Agriculture remains the backbone of Myanmar’s economy, employing nearly 60% of the workforce and contributing significantly to rural incomes. Within this, vegetable cultivation is a fast-growing segment, driven by rising domestic consumption and export potential to regional markets. Sweet corn is one of the key vegetable crops, valued for both fresh consumption and processing.
However, Myanmar’s smallholder farmers face structural challenges:
- Climate variability in the Delta and Dry Zone regions affects planting reliability.
- Yield gaps compared to regional competitors limit market competitiveness.
- Pest and disease pressure is a consistent concern in high-humidity growing zones.
- Limited access to improved seed varieties constrains productivity and income potential.
Against this backdrop, introducing resilient and high-performing hybrids is essential to strengthen farmer livelihoods and enhance the sector’s competitiveness.
Key Features of Sugar King Improved
- Improved Germination – delivering stronger crop establishment under variable field conditions.
- High Yield Potential – enabling farmers to achieve higher output per hectare.
- Disease Resistance – reducing vulnerability to common sweet corn pathogens.
- Life Shield Technology – an innovative treatment applied to the seed for improved performance and market differentiation.
These traits are aligned with farmer needs for reliability, cost-efficiency, and market-ready produce.

Field Day Engagement
On 6 July 2025, EWMM hosted a field day in Taungoo Township, Bago Region, attended by 30 farmers. Participants observed crop performance in the field and discussed with EWMM agronomy teams the benefits and market potential of the new hybrid.
Across all six field day activities, farmer feedback highlighted interest in the hybrid’s performance traits, particularly germination strength and yield potential.
Outlook
The introduction of Sugar King Improved represents an important step in expanding access to modern hybrid varieties in Myanmar’s vegetable sector. By bridging the gap between farmer expectations and market requirements, the variety is positioned to deliver value to growers while contributing to the development of a more resilient and competitive sweet corn industry in Myanmar.
