Punjab University, Chinese varsity to work on crop varieties, food security

In a significant step toward advancing agricultural innovation and bilateral cooperation, Punjab University Department of Plant Breeding and Genetics Chairman Prof Dr Muhammad Ashfaq, Dr Muhammad Ali Klasra and Dr Abdul Rashid hosted a high-level meeting with Prof Yuan and a distinguished delegation of Chinese scientists and academics.

The meeting centered around strategic collaboration in agricultural science and technology, with a strong emphasis on climate-resilient crop varieties and food security. Discussions explored the transfer and joint development of weather and climate-resistant crops, aiming to bolster sustainable agriculture across both nations.

According to Dr Muhamad Ashfaq the scientific collaboration will be fruitful on crop improvement, joint research initiatives to enhance crop productivity and resilience using cutting-edge technologies. He said that future perspectives for China–Pakistan Relations: Strengthening ties through shared agricultural goals and innovation. Technology Exchange under CPEC & Belt and Road: leveraging the China–Pakistan Economic Corridor to facilitate technology provision across partner countries, he added.

He said that both sides agreed to finalize formal cooperation frameworks in the near future. He stated that academic exchange programs and other plans were laid for cross-country student and faculty exchange programs to foster mutual learning and capacity building.

He also expressed heartfelt gratitude to Prof Yuan Guobao, Prof Li Yin, Prof Shen Xiangling, Mr Jiang Mao Shuang and Mr Hu,Yongfeng of the Chinese delegation for their insightful contributions and commitment to future research collaboration. He said that this meeting marks a promising chapter in our shared pursuit of agricultural excellence.
