Vietnam - How East-West Seed’s cucumbers gave this rice farmer a new start

December 18, 2025

For Ho Van Hai, farming runs in his blood. In his quiet village in Vietnam, he spent years cultivating rice, following the traditions passed down through generations. But while rice farming provided stability, it offered little opportunity for growth. With a wife and three children to support, Hai began to dream of a better future. That dream took root when he decided to diversify his farm and plant cucumbers using East-West Seed varieties.

“Switching to cucumbers was the best decision I’ve made. They’re ten to twenty times more profitable than rice,” Hai shares.

Hai quickly saw how East-West Seed’s cucumber varieties, known for their high yield, strong vigor, and disease resistance, could provide him with a stable and rewarding income.

“The plants are strong, have many branches, and resist diseases like downy mildew. They make farming easier and more productive,” he explains.

The quick, concentrated harvests also meant Hai could focus more time on his family while maintaining steady earnings.

A Better Life for His Family

The shift to cucumbers didn’t just improve Hai’s finances—it transformed his family’s life.

“Our meals are better now. I can buy household items, take care of my children, and even plan to buy more land,” he says.

With his increased income, Hai has been able to provide his children with more opportunities and ensure their futures are secure. His success has inspired him to expand his farm and encourage his children to continue the family’s farming tradition.

“I want to buy more land for cucumbers and teach my children to grow them. This crop has given us a good life,” he adds.

Farming, however, is never without challenges. Weather conditions and diseases like anthracnose often threaten crops. Yet Hai has found confidence in East-West Seed’s cucumber varieties, which consistently outperform others in disease resistance and yield.

“Other seeds don’t compare. East-West Seed’s cucumbers are reliable, and I always recommend them to other farmers,” Hai says.

“Since discovering East-West Seed’s cucumbers, I’ve planted them every year. They’ve brought me happiness and success,” he added.

Looking ahead, Hai dreams of growing his farm and helping his children build on his legacy. For him, cucumbers represent more than just a crop-they are a foundation for a brighter, more secure future.

“I’ll keep growing cucumbers because they’ve changed our lives. This is the future I want for my family,” Hai concludes.
