Why Waxy Corn Became the Right Choice for a Farmer in Vietnam

In Tây Ninh, Vietnam, farmer Ngô Hoàng Bảo found a better way to make the most of his land through waxy corn.

Before growing corn, Bảo planted cassava and sugarcane. But he was looking for a crop that could bring faster returns, require less labor, and offer a more practical option for his farm. That search led him to Lion 10, East-West Seed’s pure white waxy corn variety.

Bảo first heard about Lion 10 from another farmer who had tried it. After learning more about the variety and comparing it with other options, he decided it was the right choice for his conditions. What stood out to him was not only its market potential, but also its field performance. Lion 10 offers good eating quality, long shelf life, and very uniform ears. It also has a shorter plant type with good resistance to lodging, helping farmers manage the crop more easily in the field.

For Bảo, those traits made a real difference. Lion 10 matures in around 60 to 65 days after sowing, allowing him to harvest and earn income in a shorter time. With ear weight of around 330 to 380 grams and lower susceptibility to a common leaf disease in corn called corn southern leaf blight, the variety gave him a crop that was both practical to grow and attractive for the market.

Unlike cassava and sugarcane, waxy corn offered faster returns with less effort. “It’s easier to care for and gives higher income in a shorter time,” he explains. From one hectare of waxy corn, he keeps around 70% as profit after covering expenses—a great improvement compared to his previous crops. This increase in his income has allowed him to expand his farm, where he grows corn alongside other vegetables like bitter gourd and wax gourd, and to invest in a truck to transport his produce to market.

The journey was not without challenges. Pest management was difficult at first, but Bảo improved over time by learning from experience and from other farmers in his area. That practical, step-by-step learning helped him become more confident in managing his crops.

What matters most to Bảo is not only the harvest, but what it makes possible. Better income from farming has helped him support his family and create more opportunities for his children. For him, a good harvest means greater stability, less financial pressure, and more hope for the future.

His advice to other farmers is simple: if the land is suitable, waxy corn is worth trying. With a fast-growing crop, farmers can see results quickly and decide sooner whether it is the right fit for their farm.

Ngô Hoàng Bảo’s story shows how the right crop choice, combined with farmer knowledge and determination, can help build a stronger livelihood and a better future.
