CRAG held yesterday the second edition of the CRAG Empresas meeting, an initiative designed to strengthen the connection between research, business and innovation in the agri-food sector. The event brought together more than 80 attendees from 36 different organizations, including 18 private companies, as well as public institutions, foundations and other entities linked to the scientific and technological ecosystem.

The event began with opening remarks by the CRAG director, L. Maria Lois Rojas, followed by a presentation by researcher Josep Mª Casacuberta, who introduced nGENIA, a scientific advisory project on new genomic techniques developed in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture. This was followed by Aime Jaskolowski, head of the CRAG genome editing platform, who presented the capabilities and services offered by this infrastructure to support research and innovation projects.

The first round table, “From the lab to the field”, was moderated by David Lapuente (Biovegen) and featured Ana Judith Martín de la Fuente (MAPA), Natalia Urzua (ANOVE), Luis Tirado Blázquez (SEO/BirdLife) and Joan Simó Cruanyes (Casa Ametller). The session focused on the opportunities and challenges posed by new genomic techniques for plant innovation, science policy and their application in the agri-food sector. This was followed by a talk from researcher Iván Reyna-Llorens on the role of fundamental research as a driver of future innovations in agriculture.

Basic research as the origin of future innovation was the focus of the second round table, “When basic science creates value”, moderated by Carlos Muñoz, head of the CRAG Knowledge Transfer Office (KTO). It brought together representatives of startups emerging from the CRAG ecosystem: Federico Jurado (PloidAI), Ana I. Caño-Delgado (PLANeT Biotech), Riccardo Aiese Cigliano (Sequentia Biotech) and Tarik Ruiz Medina (Vytrus Biotech), who shared experiences on technology transfer, scientific entrepreneurship and the creation of impact from research.

The meeting concluded with a session aimed at fostering new collaboration opportunities between CRAG and the business ecosystem, led by Oscar Rey (ARVOR) and Carlos Muñoz, along with B2B meetings and visits to different facilities of the center.

With this second edition, CRAG Empresas is consolidating itself as a key meeting point to strengthen the connection between research, industry and institutions, promoting knowledge transfer and the generation of innovation in the agri-food sector.
