Scientists from Pakistan's National Institute of Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering identify different viruses that cause cotton leaf curl disease

Pakistan
July 18, 2011

A team of Scientists “Agriculture Biotechnology Division”, National Institute of Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering–NIBGE, Punjab, Faisalabad, Pakistan identify different Viruses that caused cotton leaf Curl Disease(CLCuD).

Cotton leaf curl disease (CLCuD) is a devasting disease causing an infection in cotton leaves which turn to a huge loss. CLCuD is caused by begomoviruses with a disease-specific symptom detg. Satellite (Cotton leaf curl Multan betasaellite (CLCuMB) and, in some cases, a non-essential alphasatellite (the function of which remains unclear). These components were cloned from six samples collected in Sindh and five from Punjab.

A recombinant Biotechnology has been used for a complete full length sequence of different virus’s clones, Identified from different species of cotton. The results indicate that the clone responsible for CLCuD in Sindh is distinct from that in the adjacent Punjab province. Possible reasons for these differences are discussed In the research paper Virus Research (2010), 153(1), 161-165.It is a great research which can help in identification of diseases in cotton to cure it from the viruses as well as to loss a significant amount.
