Changes in the yellow rust race situation in the UK during 2009, have necessitated a major revision of the resistance ratings on the HGCA Recommended List for winter wheat.
"For several varieties the ratings have fallen by four points or more," says HGCA's Recommended List manager, Dr Jim McVittie. "Oakley which used to have a medium resistance of 6 has fallen to 2, making it as susceptible to the disease as Robigus. This will be very important to growers as Oakley is currently the most popular variety in seed production with nearly 12% of the certified seed area in 2009."
The rating of Solstice has also fallen considerably from 9 to 4. This is currently the most widely grown group 1 milling variety with over 7% of the certified seed area in 2009.
Other significant changes are: Ketchum and Viscount which fall from 8 to 4; Duxford and Marksman which fall from 8 to 5; and Gallant which falls from 6 to 4.
Growers will need to be aware of these new ratings when monitoring crops for disease and on some varieties may have to consider using an appropriate seed treatment to give early disease control in areas particularly prone to yellow rust.
"Yellow rust is constantly evolving to produce new races" explains NIAB's Dr Rosemary Bayles, who is responsible for the UK Cereal Pathogen Virulence Survey. "If a new race is able to overcome the resistance of a popular variety, or group of varieties, it can spread very rapidly. Routine monitoring is essential to keep one step ahead of the pathogen and warn growers and breeders of imminent changes."
The most significant change during the 2009 season was the widespread appearance of a complex race which infects Solstice, Oakley and a wide range of other varieties.
All the new ratings are given in the table.
