Five customers who purchased seed from Wheat Growers took home yield honors this year in North and South Dakota corn, soybean and sorghum contests. The yields these producers experienced are even more impressive when held up against national averages.
One of the National Corn Growers Association Yield Contest state winners in North Dakota was the Quandt Bros., of Oakes. They took second place, No-Till/Strip-Till Non-Irrigated, with 230.2 bushels per acre, and third place, Irrigated, with 230.7 bushels per acre, both planting Dekalb DKC46-20.
In South Dakota, Steve Breeding of Chamberlain took second place in Irrigated, with 279.9 bushels per acre, with Dekalb DKC62-97.
Val Mosel of Lower Brule earned first place, No-Till/Strip-Till Irrigated, with 260.2 bushels per acre; and second place, No-Till/Strip-Till Irrigated, with 259.6 bushels per acre, with Dekalb DKC59-90.
It’s interesting to compare those numbers with the USDA national averages. Twenty years ago the average yield for corn was 138 bushels per acre. In 2004 it was 160 bushels per acre, and last year it was 171 bushels per acre.
The South Dakota Soybean Association Yield Contest winners included Eric Kroupa of Pukwana, who earned second place in Group II Non-Irrigated, with 81.1 bushels per acre, planting Asgrow AG2431.
The national average for soybeans 20 years ago was 41 bushels per acre, while it was 42 bushels per acre in 2004. Last year the average was 48 bushels per acre.
The South Dakota state winner in the National Sorghum Producers Yield Contest was Ken Schindler and Sons of Reliance, who took first place in the No-Till/Non-Irrigated division, with 142.9 bushels per acre, planting Dekalb DKS29-28.
The sorghum yield numbers include 73 bushels per acre 20 years ago, 69 bushels per acre in 2004 and 68 bushels per acre last year.
