Ireland - Reseeding demonstrations - Germinal in conjunction with Teagasc have organised two upcoming reseeding demonstrations

Ireland
May 17, 2016

The focus of these two demonstrations is to ensure we are maximising the potential of our farms to grow grass. We are all aware of the value of increasing grass utilisation in dairy, beef and sheep production systems. Managing swards to maximise the yield and quality of forage produced is critical to maintain low costs and maximise profit. Grassland reseeding will increase the quantity and quality of grass you grow on your farm. New leys are 25% more responsive to nitrogen fertiliser than old swards. There are a number of key steps that you must take to ensure a successful reseed is established, including building soil fertility and correcting soil pH. Choose grass varieties and an establishment method that best suits your field. Finally and often overlooked is the correct selection of a post emergence spray to eliminate problem weeds. Good grazing management will improve tillering and sward quality for many years to come.

Grassland reseeding is expensive, but done correctly, Teagasc has shown that the cost can be recovered within 2 years.

Event 1
Westport, Co. Mayo – Thursday 26th May at 4.30 pm on the farm of Sean McLaughlin, West Road, Westport. The event will discuss reseeding, soil fertility, varieties, grassland management and weed control, with a machinery demo also taking place. In addition to this there will also be a demonstration of fencing options on display.

Event 2
Killimor, Co. Galway – Friday 27th May at 11am on the farm of Noel O’Toole, Killimor, Co. Galway. Noel is a past winner of the Dairy Farmer of the Year. The event will discuss reseeding, soil fertility, varieties, grassland management and weed control, with a machinery demo also taking place.
