Horizon Ag's Provisia demo fields reach permanent flood

USA
June 15, 2017

Provisia rice field in Kaplan, Louisiana on June 13.

Horizon Ag is fortunate to have the new Provisia rice system in demonstration fields, in addition to seed production fields scattered throughout south Louisiana and the Delta of Arkansas. These fields are providing a valuable tool for Horizon Ag and BASF field staff to get acquainted with the new Provisia herbicide (quizalofop-P-ethyl) and the Provisia variety that will be available for planting next season, PVL01. We are working diligently on collecting information so that our education efforts can help growers have the best experience possible in 2018 as they try this exciting new technology.

Except for a couple locations, all of the Provisia demonstration fields have reached permanent flood. This report highlights two locations and describes the weed management program to date for these locations.

Provisia herbicide is proving to be an excellent grass herbicide for rice, which was expected. Furthermore, we’ve witnessed the herbicide perform exceptionally well in controlling the weedy rice species where the pressure has skyrocketed this year in a lot of fields in south Louisiana. Everyone with a demonstration field or seed production has been impressed with the grass control and weedy rice control capabilities of Provisia rice system.

The demo field in McGehee, Arkansas was planted April 14. This field is an old fish pond and was under water for several days around the time that the first application of Provisia needed to be made. The application was delayed several days because of the time it took the water to get off the field, the rice to recover and the wind to cooperate.

The demo field located near Kaplan, Louisiana was planted April 7. This field will be featured at the Horizon Ag field day on June 27 at Richard Farms. This field, and adjacent fields, had recently been inundated with the weedy rice complex. So far, this field demonstrates the value the Provisia rice system can bring to South Louisiana and the other southern U.S. rice production areas.

The table below outlines the herbicide programs used so far for the two highlighted demonstration fields.

2017 DEMO FIELD HERBICIDES

The McGehee, Arkansas location is now at late tillering and the Kaplan, Louisiana location is now at early boot. We look forward to seeing you in Kaplan, LA on June 27 and/or at Jonesboro, Arkansas on August 10 to show you the exciting new Provisia rice system, in addition to a new lineup of Clearfield® varieties. In the meantime, we will continue to provide updates on the progress of our Provisia rice demonstrations.
