Speaking at the recent Rice Awards Luncheon at the 2017 Rice Outlook Conference, Dr. Tim Walker, Horizon Ag General Manager, said partnerships are essential to advancing the industry.
“Long-term viability is dependent on a lot of factors, but probably none more so than partnership,” said Walker. “Everyone here represents a segment of our great industry. Few, if any of us, would be here if it weren’t for the person sitting next to you or even across the room from you as we are intricately linked.”
That partnership extends to industry associates and even competitors, all of whom were represented at the annual event, he said. Horizon Ag is the sponsor of the Rice Awards along with Rice Farming Magazine and USA Rice.
This year’s award winners were:
- Christian Richard, Rice Farmer of the Year
- Dr. Xueyan Sha, Rice Industry Award
- Chuck Wilson, Rice Lifetime Achievement Award
“I know each of the award winners personally, and it is a great pleasure of mine to be able to be here and present these awards,” said Walker. “Congratulations to all of these very deserving individuals.”
During the event, the next class of participants in the Rice Leadership Development Program was also announced.
“One way to build for the future is to identify and recognize future leaders and invest in them so that they can be educated on our rice industry with the hopes they too will take on greater leadership roles,” said Walker. “I was honored to be selected to be a part of this program years ago, and I know what it meant to me.”
He said the Rice Awards, Leadership Development Program and other initiatives at the Rice Outlook Conference are examples of how the industry can come together and work for the good of U.S. rice and U.S. rice farmers.
“President Harry Truman once stated, ‘It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit,’” said Walker. “In an industry like the U.S. rice industry, we need to remember those words often and continue to partner to ensure our viability into the future.”
