RIKILT Wageningen University & Research has been given the important task in the EU with respect to research into mycotoxins and plant toxins in relation to food safety. On 1 March 2018, RIKILT will be European Union Reference Laboratory (EURL) for mycotoxins and plant toxins. This duty is commissioned by the European Commission.
Mandatory checks
As EURL, you have to make sure that the research and the statutory mandatory checks into mycotoxins and plant toxins in food and feed are properly set up and carried out by the National Reference laboratories (NRLs) in each Member State. A major component of this task is to develop and make available the analytical methods for analysis to the NRLs.
20 years experience
RIKILT has more than 20 years of experience as EURL for growth hormones in animal derived food products. The Wageningen institute was nominated for the job to the European Commission by the Netherlands Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority, with support from the Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality.

RIKILT wordt Europees Referentie Laboratorium voor het meten van giftige plantstoffen en schimmelgiffen
RIKILT Wageningen University & Research krijgt een belangrijke taak in Europa als het gaat om onderzoek naar giftige plantstoffen en schimmelgiffen in relatie tot voedselveiligheid.
Vanaf 1 maart 2018 is het instituut het nieuwe Europees Referentie Laboratorium (EURL) voor mycotoxinen en planttoxinen. De taak wordt uitgevoerd in opdracht van de Europese Commissie.
Verplichte controle
Als EURL moet je er voor zorgen dat het onderzoek en de wettelijk verplichte controle naar giftige plantstoffen en giftige stoffen gemaakt door schimmels in voeding en diervoerder goed wordt opgezet en uitgevoerd. Een belangrijk onderdeel hiervan is het beschikbaar stellen van meetmethoden om deze stoffen te kunnen analyseren. En als bepaalde methoden niet beschikbaar zijn, moet het EURL deze ontwikkelen. Ook organiseert een EURL testen waarmee nationale referentielaboratoria in Europa worden getoetst door analyseresultaten te vergelijken. Wanneer verschillende Europese labs identieke monsters onderzoeken moeten de resultaten namelijk gelijk zijn.
20 jaar ervaring
RIKILT heeft al ruim twintig jaar ervaring als EURL. Ze voert deze taak onder andere ook uit voor groeihormonen in dierlijke producten.
De Nederlandse Voedsel- en Warenautoriteit, ondersteund door het ministerie van Landbouw, Natuur en Voedselkwaliteit heeft het Wageningse instituut voorgedragen bij de Europese Commissie als kandidaat voor deze taak.
