USA - Manage weedy rice now, prevent future issues with Provisia variety PVL01

With weedy rice threatening to choke entire fields out of rice in some areas of the South, farmers have access to an important new tool this season that can help bring their land back into profitable production – the Provisiaä Rice System and PVL01 variety from Horizon Ag. “We’ve been getting a lot of interest from farmers and seed retailers regarding the potential to plant PVL01 this season,” said Dr. Tim Walker, Horizon Ag general manager. “As of now, there is still PVL01 seed available for farmers who need to start taking back their fields or better manage fields to prevent the problem from building.”
Walker noted that the new system is needed in many areas to counter the resistant weedy rice complex that become a serious problem in many fields. When used in rotation with the Clearfieldâ Production System for rice, the Provisia Rice System gives farmers more control options, allowing for rotating different herbicide modes of action.
“Almost 15 years ago, Clearfield rice varieties changed rice farming across the region for the better,” he said. “With the availability of PLV01, farmers have another critical tool to manage problem weeds and improve profitability. For instance, Provisia rice will bring tremendous value in areas where red rice and barnyardgrass have become resistant to Newpathâ herbicide and other ALS chemistry.”
PVL01, the first Provisia rice variety available, offers growers the potential for good yields and outstanding quality.
“Many farmers will want to use the variety in 2018 to begin to bring severely infested fields back into production and make higher yields,” said Walker. “Others will take a stewardship approach and begin to use this new technology to help manage against future issues. PVL01 and the Provisia Rice System will make a difference in fields today and for the future.”
Farmers interested in PVL01 this season are encouraged to contact their Horizon Ag seed retailer.
